During Explorations, you’ll get to work with vital, contemporary artists in a variety of disciplines—creative writing, movement, theater, music, and visual art—and learn how the different arts interconnect.

Draft 2.0

Water World, a collaboration between Centrum and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, features activities and projects that expand and enhance elementary students’ experience of the marine world through both scientific and artistic lenses.

In collaboration with artists, scientists, and peers from across the state, students integrate scientific investigations with creative writing, dance, and visual art. The result is a holistic and multi-faceted learning experience.

Students work in small groups that rotate through activities in the field as well as in laboratories, performance studios, and natural history exhibits. Each day offers a mix of both scientific and artistic workshops. The group size is small to allow for maximum personal attention and minimum impact on fragile environments.

“The blues is the blueprint,” says blues and reggae musician Corey Harris, who will take over as the Artistic Director of the Port Townsend Country Blues Festival in 2009. “You can go from that blueprint and build whatever house you want," Harris says. "That’s something that we as black Americans have given to the world: the concept of the blues. But at the same time, I'm of a different generation. I didn't ever have to go to the back of a bus. If I was out on the road, I wouldn't have to camp in my car because they wouldn't let black people in the hotel. So I'm trying to represent what my tradition is, and then represent my individual self in the contemporary moment."

The Port Townsend Country Blues Festival is known nationally as a week-long, total-immersion experience that passes down the skills, sounds, stories, laughter, and pain of the authentic bearers of the acoustic country blues tradition. Nights feature intimate faculty-led house parties and night-long jamming, dancing, and special events. The Festival culminates on Friday and Saturday with mainstage and club performances at Fort Worden and in the venues of downtown Port Townsend.

In September 2007 The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced that Harris is among 24 people named MacArthur Fellows for 2007. The award comes with $500,000 to be given over five years.

Jack Olmsted, Videoblogging 206, talks to Jerron Paxton, a young blues player, that will be teaching and jammin at the Port Townsend Country Blues Festival this week.

The Los Angeles based legally blind teen also plays the guitar, harmonica, pinao and washboard, and is one of the best of a rising crop of young African-American musicians learning country blues in the communities from which it arose. This is the second part of a conversation that was set-up with Jerron 24 hours before his very first flight ever to the Pacific Northwest.

Domenic Greco, Ph.D., CEO Smart Brain Games, has been in the business of delivering Biofeedback services, both peripheral and EEG NeuroTherapy since 1982. He has successfully developed and operated treatment centers specializing in Biofeedback for stress related disorders, and EEG NeuroTherapy for ADHD on both the East and West coasts. Dr. Greco is an innovator in the ADHD field and has operated some of the largest ADHD, EEG NeuroTherapy centers in the country. He has lectured nationally and appeared before NIMH as an expert in EEG NeuroTherapy.

Cyd Imel, Executive Director of the Learning Disabilities Association of Washington -Cyd is a leader in the field of learning disabilities, social justice, and social skills/life training.

Cyd Imel is the Executive Director of the LDA of Washington. She brings with her experience with ADAWashington issues in the learning disabled community, both as a disabled person and a professional. She has authored three nationally recognized curriculums on social skills development for LD/ADHD adolescent and adults. Cyd has provided training nationally and internationally for 14 years in this field. She works with employers and employees dealing on workplace accommodations. As an adolescent with an undiagnosed learning disability and attention deficit disorder, Cyd spent time in trouble with school and the law. “It was better to be bad than stupid. This is an uncomfortable world to be in when you have a learning disability and/or attention deficit disorder. It was better for me to get in trouble with my teachers and the law than it was to appear stupid to my peers.” Diagnosed at age 35 as dyslexic and having attention deficit disorder, Cyd has successfully completed her education process and is a Certified Criminal Justice Specialist and Registered Counselor. She has worked for the Learning Disabilities Association of since 1987.

For the first time in its 23-year history, a kourse korrection was required at the Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race. (See Kinetuc Universe Video Blog)

The white kaps in the bay were so foreboding Sunday morning that a konference of kourse and city officials was kwickly konvened. All konkurred to move the water segment of the kourse to the protected area at the Fort Worden State Park pier, next to the kwicksand kourse.

The stiff, chilly winds failed to deter anyone from the pre-race ceremonies, not even the BBC crew filming the event for its children's TV series, "Only in America."

After surviving the beach and water at Fort Worden, the 16 entrants endured an especially windy and More-Dismal-Than-Usual Bog churned up at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

A stalwart krowd cheered and hooted as some teams slogged through the mud the hard way while others bribed their way down the sidelines. "Look the other way everyone, the judges are cheating!" Efra announced as Supreme Kourt reversed its motion and was lifted out of what had appeared to be a permanent restraining order of knee-deep mud." Steven Hager has been covering the counterculture for over 35 years. He founded The Tin Whistle, his first underground newspaper, in 1968, while still a high school student in Illinois. Twelve years later, he was the first reporter to travel to the South Bronx to document the history of hip hop. Hager became an editor of High Times in 1987. Later he founded the Cannabis Cup and became a leading figure in the hemp legalization movement of the ‘90s.
